The business of animal
agriculture has changed so dramatically in the past generation that many of the
historical norms no longer exist.
The fundamental problems and solutions need to have
a new look and the
new stakeholders need to take different approaches to the problems.
Technology created the changes in animal agriculture. It gave us
mechanical technology that allowed larger operations to operate at lower cost.
Technology also improved genetics, allowing faster and more efficient growth.
Technology also afforded superior animal nutrition, which enhances
genetics. All this made larger
operations the least cost animal production system. This, however, has created the problem of too much
manure is one place.
Now it is time for
technology to solve the problems it has created. As with all industries,
economics is the primary driver therefore finding high value uses for the
animal manure is the best and probably only solution.
The potential is huge.
Animal Agriculture produces tremendous volumes of animal waste. The total volume approaches
tons. The amounts that could
reasonably be collected commercially would be approximately 25 million tons or
50 billion pounds. Today most of
the volume is either applied as fertilizer for a value of less than $20 per ton
or one cent a pound. By adding
even one cent per pound to the value and adding two cents to the final
products, it is a billion dollar industry.
PNC Products wants to be a
catalyst and innovative part of the animal manure solutions.
